Heritage Walk – Stories of Summits in Chamonix
Loop: 4 km / Elevation gain: +50 m – 50 m
Meeting point: Les Praz train station (accessible by train/car/bus)
Once a simple village, Chamonix has become, over 300 years, the world capital of skiing and mountaineering. This walk follows quiet trails and streets in the valley floor, offering views of most surrounding peaks—each with its own story: victories, tragedies, love stories, and surprising anecdotes. You will discover the birth and evolution of mountaineering.
Life in the Alpine Pastures – Les Houches
Route: 5 km / Elevation gain: +300 m – 300 m
Meeting point: At the base of the Prarion gondola in Les Houches (accessible by car/bus/train – Viaduc Ste Marie stop on request)
In the past, the climate was harsh and the terrain rugged. You will discover a beautiful, authentic site and learn about the daily lives of the men and women who shaped this valley. They had to adapt day after day to these difficult conditions and organize themselves to make the most of the surrounding nature.
Granite, a “Precious” Stone in Chamonix
Loop: 4 km / Elevation gain: +200 m – 200 m
Meeting point: Les Tines train station (accessible by car/bus/train) / End: Les Praz station
Granite is an iconic rock of the valley, both in the mountains and in town. Coming from deep within the earth to embellish Chamonix’s buildings, you will discover its journey. The guide will take you to a former quarry site to understand the history and craftsmanship of past “granite workers.”
Water, Source of Life and Energy – Vallorcine
Loop: 4 km / Elevation gain: +330 m – 330 m
Meeting point: Le Buet train station (accessible by car/train)
Along a varied route in the Vallorcine Valley, you will move from waterfalls to streams, from forests to alpine pastures, with stunning panoramic views. Sophie will explain throughout the walk the ever-present role of water, past and present.
Life and Disappearance of the “Glaciers of Chamouny” – Argentière
Route: 4 km / Elevation gain: +250 m – 350 m
Meeting point: Montroc train station / End: Argentière station
The guide will not take you onto a glacier (reserved for high-mountain guides), but on a route that allows you to admire them. They are still magnificent but gradually disappearing. Why? How? Sophie will explain their origins and evolution. Can we preserve them for future generations? What are the challenges behind this issue?
Eclectic Journey into the Past – Les Houches
Loop: 4 km / Elevation gain: +300 m – 300 m
Meeting point: Bettey-Coupeau parking (accessible by car)
The guide will take you on one of her favorite routes, showcasing the diversity and richness of the surrounding nature while exploring several aspects of the history and heritage of the Chamonix Valley. Alpine pastures, forests, glacial lakes, and peat bogs are on the program, along with magnificent views of the Mont-Blanc massif.
